Scott Base Central Otago Pinot Noir 2009

The Allan Scott Family has always shown a keen interest in Central Otago. The Scott Base vineyard was established in 1994 and is situated in the heart of Central Otago on terraces overlooking the town of Cromwell and Lake Dunstan.


A terraced vineyard with sandy, silty, loam soil, and sustainably managed. The vines are spur pruned, and the laterals removed to encourage the vine to concentrate on fruit production. Once the grapes have reached optimum ripeness the fruit is selectively harvested by hand.


Destemmed then crushed into open top fermenters the grapes were subsequently cooled rapidly. After cold soaking for colour extraction, the must was then warmed and a mixture of indigenous and cultured yeasts were employed for primary fermentation. During fermentation and the post ferment maceration process the cap was plunged daily to extract maximum flavours and colour. The wine was then left in tank to ‘post macerate’ on its skins. When the desirable flavour profile was reached the wine was pressed off, settled and transferred to a mixture of new and old French oak barriques. These barrels were put through full malolactic fermentation and left to mature and develop on lees.


Having great depth of colour this beautifully fragrant 2009 Pinot Noir shows ripe plum, cherry fruit, dried herbs and spice characters along with impressive weight, concentration and complexity. With well ingrated French oak this wine is rich and dense, elegant with velvety tannins. The finish is enticing and long.

Serving Suggestions

Ideal with patés and salami, this wine matches beautifully with beef and lamb dishes, and try also pairing with game. Don’t be afraid to serve with a dark chocolate mousse either. Drink now or cellar for up to 5 years.
